Why Homestead Exists
Three pillars.
One unshakeable belief.
Veterans have served on behalf of all of us. Homestead is the community deciding that service deserves something solid in return β not a case number, but a home.
Permanent Roots
Not a shelter. Not transitional. A street address that stays yours β where mail arrives with your name on it and neighbors know which porch is yours.
"After 18 months on my sister's couch, I finally had a door I could lock from the inside."

Built by Community
Local volunteers swing hammers on Saturdays. Neighbors plant gardens together. Every beam placed is a neighbor deciding that someone else's stability matters.
"The guy who framed my bedroom β he shook my hand when it was done. I still think about that."

Designed for Dignity
Front porches face shared gardens. Units have storage, natural light, and space to breathe. Architecture that says: you belong here, fully.
"My kitchen has a window over the sink. I didn't know that would matter so much until it did."

Field notes.
Real voices.
"I slept in my car for eleven months after my discharge. The VA kept telling me to wait. Homestead gave me a unit with a porch light that stays on. My daughter visits on Sundays now."

Build Day #31
82 volunteers. 1 roof raised.
Letter received Β· Jan 2026
"To whoever reads this β I want you to know that the address on the envelope means everything to me. For three years I had no address. No mail. Nothing official with my name on it. Now I do. Thank you for the porch, too."

Community by the numbers
Keisha Patterson
VA Housing Caseworker, Asheville
"I've worked in veteran services for nine years. Homestead is the first placement where I don't worry about where they'll go when the program ends. Because there's no 'end' β it's a home."
